What is Periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is an infection that attacks the supporting structure of the teeth -- namely the bone, ligaments and gums that support the teeth in the jaws. In its early stage it is called gingivitis (gum inflamation); the more advanced stage is known as periodontitis.

What causes periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is caused by PLAQUE. Plaque is a sticky film composed of many different types of bacteria that form continuously on the teeth. If not renewed , the plaque gradually hardens into calculus (tartar). As the infection progresses, loss of supporting bone occurs and spaces develop and deepen between the gums and the teeth. These spaces, called periodontal pockets, allow plaque and calculus to accumulate underneath the gum. It becomes progressively more difficult for you and your dentist to clean as the pockets get deeper. If the infection progresses unchecked, teeth will be lost.

Gingivitis - Stage 1 - an Image
  • Inflamation of the gums
  • May appear bright red
  • Bleed when brushed or probed
  • 3-4mm pockets
  • Minor accumulation of plaque and calculus - no loss of bone support
Early Periodontitis
Early Periodontitis - Stage 2 - an Image
  • Greater inflammation of the gums
  • Gums begin to separate from tooth
  • Inflammation reaches bone - mild bone loss
  • Up to 5mm pockets
  • Unpleasant breath or taste
  • Evident accumulation of plaque and calculus
Moderate Periodontitis
Moderate Periodontitis - Stage 3 - an Image
  • A perio abscess may develop
  • Gums recede - teeth appear longer
  • Root surface exposed - sensitivity - root decay
  • Possible function involvement
  • Bad breath - difficult to clean - moderate plaque and calculus
  • 5-6mm pockets
  • Bone loss - 20 - 50%
Advanced Periodontitis
Advanced Periodontitis - Stage 4 - an Image
  • Loose or drifting teeth
  • More than 50% bone loss
  • Significant plaque and calculus
  • Leads to tooth loss or decision to remove teeth
