GETTING AROUND by CAR
For those who want to travel at own pace, off the beaten track or to stop where they love the atmosphere.
Car travel tips:
- Reserve a rental car before leaving North America to save a significant amount. Further savings may be available by combining a car rental with air tickets, rail passes and accommodations.
- When making a car reservation, be sure to specify if you want automatic transmission, most rental cars in Europe come with a stick shift.
- Inform the agent if you plan to travel into other countries.
- Your regular driver’s license is valid in most countries but an International Driver’s Permit is strongly recommended (in Austria and Poland it is mandatory). The International permit is available at CAA and is useful as basic information is in nine languages, expediting dealings with local officials.
- Note that some countries, such as the Czech Republic, have a zero-tolerance policy on any alcohol use by drivers.
