This trio shows the interconnection of an early Baroque palace with its surrounding landscaped gardens.

KromYí~, a town of historical monuments, art and culture, is one of the finest towns in the Czech Republic and is sometimes called the Athens of the Haná Region . The history of this town in central Moravia in the foothills of the ChYiby Hills, has for centuries been associated with the bishops and archbishops of Olomouc who chose KromYí~ as their summer residence. Over time the palace has undergone many alterations, but the most radical transformation into an early Baroque residence was carried out by Bishop Karel Liechtenstein-Castelcorn in the late 17th century.

The Palace and gardens are regarded as an exceptionally beautiful and well-preserved example of Baroque design. In their time they played a very important role in the development of central European Baroque palace and garden architecture. The dominant feature of the palace is the 84m-high tower. The guided tour not only takes in the palace s halls full of valuable furniture and works of art, but also visits the gallery housing works from the 15th to the 18th century by artists from around Europe (Titian, Veronese, van Dyck, Cranach the elder, Schönfeldt). The grand Assembly Hall reminds us of the fact that the Imperial parliament sat here from 1848 49; the Feudal Hall recalls the feudal system under the bishops of Olomouc and the sala terrena brings back visions of noble parties and visits by various European heads of state. The chateau library contains almost 100,000 manuscripts, early printed books, old works, drawings and graphic art, and the music archive is still a source of knowledge for those interested in Baroque music in particular (made famous by Biber and Vejvanovský s band). The palace hosts numerous exhibitions and several music festivals throughout the year.

The Podzámecká Garden was established in the 16th century and later underwent Renaissance and Baroque makeovers. In the 19th century it was transformed into an English style park measuring 64 hectares, in which we find three lakes and various follies such as the Pompeii and Colloredo Colonnades, the Chinese pavilion and Max s Court. As part of the reconstruction of the town destroyed in the mid 17th century by war, a garden was established by the Italian architects Filiberto Lucchese and Giovanni Pietro Tencalla outside of the town walls on unfertile land for the pleasure of all art-loving guests to the palace. The Kvtná Garden measures 16 hectares, is lined with paths, has a 244m long gallery of statues depicting Greek and Roman gods and mythical and historical figures and a central rotunda.

KromYí~ is around 50km from Brno just off the Brno Olomouc motorway.

Home
