The manor house and the castle Topolcianky

The pride of the village TopolCianky lying north of Zlaté Moravce at the foothills of the Tribec Mts. is above all the extensive English park with picturesque Classicist manor house, remade of the southern tract of an older castle.

Originally there stood a Gothic water castle replaced by the Renaissance fort. By the beginning of the 19th century, the then owner Count Ján Keglevich had the southern Renaissance tract of the castle pulled down and built a Classicist one on its site, which is considered one of the purest and most beautiful specimen of architecture in the Classicist style in Slovakia.

In the past, the castle was the summer residence of the Habsburg royal house and after the Second World War it also served as such to Czechoslovak presidents. It was when also the last thorough adaptation of the structure was accomplished. The first president of the Czechoslovak Republic, T. G. Masaryk especially liked to relax and work at this place.

The Classicist tract was progressively changed into a museum. Today visitors can admire the library with more than 14,000 volumes, one of the few fully conserved Castle libraries in Slovakia. The interior and valuable furniture from the 16th to 19th centuries with wonderful ornamentation and collections of porcelain and ceramics (one of the biggest in Slovakia) also deserve attention.

Three Renaissance tracts of the Castle are now used as a hotel including presidential apartments.
