What is Tesco?
By 1995, Tesco had become the largest food
retailer in the UK, and is now market leader
with over a 16% market share.In the 1990s, Tesco expanded into Scotland
when it acquired a chain of 57 stores
from
William Low. In 1997 Tesco purchased
109
stores in the Republic of Ireland and
Northern
Ireland, which gave the company a market
leadership both north and south of
the border.
Tesco then started to expand its operations
outside the UK. In Eastern Europe,
it has
met growing consumer aspirations by
developing
stores in Poland in 1995, Hungary in
1996,
Slovakia in 1996 and the Czech Republic
in
1996. Tesco has also expanded into
Thailand
in 1998 and South Korea in 1999 through
a
joint venture with Samsung Corporation.It
opened in Taiwan in 2000, and has recently
announced a move into Malaysia in 2001
in
a joint venture with Sime Darby Sdn

Construction commenced in October 1999 by
removing of cca 150.000 m3 of earth
during
one month. In the first phase of the
project,
the built up area of hypermarket was 18.700 m2., with 10.200 of actual hypermarket’s
selling area.
In the second phase, an additional 12 100m2
of selling area was added. The project
also
contains a small “destination mall”
with
21 small stores and restaurants and
moving
sidewalks.. Parking area can accommodate
500 cars.
